Our History

Marshalls of Sutton-on-Trent had its beginnings in the late 1980's when Mr J A Marshall purchased a second hand Bedford YLQ with Plaxton 45 seat bodywork which had spent its life to date with Gash of Newark. In February 1989 Marshalls was granted an Operators licence and started a once a week service from Dunham-on-Trent to Newark for the market day.

Further vehicles were purchased as and when work became available and a network of School contract journeys was soon built up. In 1991 a service was started to carry children from the Newark area to the Grammar and High Schools in Grantham. This service started with one 30 Seater Bristol LHS and now comprises a network empolying three 86 seat double deckers and two single deck vehicles every school day.

A major milestone was accomplished in September 1998 with the purchase of the company's first brand new vehicle, a Plaxton bodied Dennis Javelin, swiftly followed by a Plaxton bodied Dennis Dart, purchased on the strength of Marshalls first break into regular stage carriage work. Today our service network operates seven days a week, 363 days a year, mainly between Tuxford & Newark, regularly using two super low floor buses with wheelchair access, two double deckers in the Grantham area and one minibus on sundays.

The Dennis vehicles set a new trend for vehicle purchase with no less than ten brand new vehicles joining the twenty strong fleet since then. Thus the fleet has progressed from Bedford, via Daimler, Leyland, Bristol and Dennis to name a few, to the predominantly Volvo fleet we run today.

What of B30, the original Bedford? It is currently undergoing restoration at the company premises for use as a special event vehicle in the future, who knows, you may see it around the local shows next year.
